Illustrated talks

I offer a range of illustrated talks and can adapt them to the needs of different audiences. Wildlife groups, photography clubs and social groups all appreciate the mixture of beautiful images, facinating information and plenty of humour. See below for a description of all of the current titles. I will travel to anywhere within reach of the Midlands and the talk charge from January 2021 is £75 plus 40p/mile from Solihull. I can provide all neccesary equipment and can adapt timings to suit group needs. See the bottom of the page for examples of previous feedback.

Secret Wildlife of the Cairngorms:
Join wildlife photographer Nick Martin as he discovers some of the special animal and birds of the Scottish Highlands. From elusive Pine Marten to cryptic Ptarmigan find out how these highland specialists exist in the most remote yet beautiful parts of Scotland.

Secret Wildlife of My Garden:
Over the last ten years Nick has transformed his bland garden into a wildlife haven and has been rewarded with some amazing wild visitors. From nest boxes, nectar rich plants, a pond and more we'll see how the garden has changed and which wonderful species have responded.

The Stories of our British Mammals:
From bats to badgers, seals to stags, discover the greatest and smallest of our British mammals. We'll explore woodlands, farmland, the coasts and the mountains searching for the exciting animals that can be so elusive but facinating. We'll also find out what makes these varied creatures so special, their relationships with other wildlife, with us and their history in this country.

Secret Wildlife of the Forest of Dean:
The beautiful Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire harbours a wide range of woodland wildlife including many secretive and surprising animals and birds. We'll look for the elusive goshawk, the shy dipper and the exotic mandarin ducks. Find out where adders hide, dormice feed and about the exciting return of the wild boar to the woodland scene.

Secrets of Wildlife Photography:
Using inspiring images as well as a few that went wrong, I will illustrate the main techniques used in wildlife photography. Getting close to wildlife, using hides and composing a pleasing image are all covered, (I make sure that this talk is appropriate for the audience and will make it far less techy for non photographer audiences.)

Discovering Scotland's Western and Northern Isles:
In this digital presentation I describe the Western Isles of Scotland including Skye and the mysterious Outer Hebrides. We then move north to the magical Shetlands. Images of landscapes and wildlife include everything from orchids to eagles and skuas to otters.

A Photographers Wild Britain:
From reptiles on the Dorset heaths to the sea bird colonies of the Shetlands we travel around Britain describing some of the wild places and the special animals and birds that live there. Enjoy stunning images from swirling flocks of waders to lekking black grouse and basking adders.

Britain's Best Wildlife:
Badgers, bluebells, eagles, hedgehogs; Britain has some wonderful and diverse wildlife. With delightful images we will count down Nicks top twenty animals, birds and plants and find out how and why Nick chose these from the countless options. We will also learn how he created a portfolio of images of these charismatic and attractive subjects. Can you guess the top five!?

Wildlife of Sydney and the Blue Mountains:
From vibrant fairy wrens to noisy cockatoos, frogmouths to fruit bats Sydney has a wide variety of wildlife to enchant visitors to this wonderful antipodean destination. Across four visits Nick has accumulated many images to illustrate his exploration of this area and its nature.

Journeys into Wild Wales
Join Nick to look for migrant birds of oak woodlands, butterflies of the Great Orme, seabirds of South Stack and so much more from his journeys into wild Wales. From Skomer to Worlds End we'll meet many of the best species that Wales has to offer.

A Celebration of British Birds
We love birds and in this talk we will find out more about our relationship with them and how many species have adapted to live alongside us and our activities. We'll look at the rare birds, the common species and the new kids on the block. We'll enjoy the best of the dawn chorus, seabirds, birds of prey and many more.

Around the UK in 200 Birds
In 2022 Nick set out to find 200 of our amazing British birds. From climbing through the snow to find mountain top snow buntings to catching a boat to find the puffins on our offshore islands he has travelled far and wide. We will enjoy the song of the nightingale and watch eagles soaring high in Scottish skies, but did Nick reach the double century!?

"Just a quick note to express my own personal thanks and also the thanks of Dorridge PROBUS Club for your excellent presentation. One of our members who can be critical sometimes said to me after the talk that it was the best he had attended in many years. I am sure you will get an invite for a return at a later date as a talk on your subject would be a good one for one of our Ladies Lunches."

"I want to thank you for your thoroughly enjoyable talk last night. We had lots of very positive feedback with comments such as ‘definitely one of the best zoom talks we have had’. I enjoyed seeing the other wildlife of the area too and the back stories to the photographs, which were all excellent. Your enthusiasm and knowledge of, and for, the area and wildlife in general was clear to see and I’m sure you enthused many people last night.

Comments of ‘can you book him again for another talk’ were numerous too, so I will definitely be in touch again in the future when I start to book another season."
